Profile

Sam Lilley was born in Philadelphia in 1989. Her father, a professional photographer, web designer, restauranteur, and her mother, a Tyler School of Art Master glass artist. Sam continually built her aesthetic and eye for art. She attended the Friends Select School in Philadelphia and studied metalsmithing. In her last two years of high school, she attended metals classes at Moore College of Art. In December of 2007 she studied in New York City at the Jewelry Art Institute with Bessie Jameson, focusing on the ancient techniques of jewelry making. In 2007 she was a full time student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia, graduating in 2011.

Coming to SCAD greatly accelerated her progress as an artist. She entered with a Metals and Jewelry major, and pursued it for three years. One quarter, Sam filled an elective requirement with an introduction sculpture class, and fell in love with it. She was amazed by the scale that she could create works on, as well as the many pieces of industrial equipment used in fabrication. As a result of switching her major to sculpture, her vision has been widened to many new possibilities.
